Controversy Over Detention Practices in Buenos Aires

The Minister of Security of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires and national deputy, Waldo Wolff, criticized the Minister of National Security, Patricia Bullrich, accusing her of lying concerning prisoners escaping from the police stations in the Argentine capital. Wolff emphasized that the law establishes that detainees must be transferred to the federal penitentiary service and not to local jails, as Bullrich argued.

In statements to A24, Wolff stated that "the rule of law was made so that when two people have differences, a judge decides" and stressed the importance of respecting judicial decisions. The City minister explained that there are court rulings that determine how certain issues should be executed and that it is the responsibility of the Minister of Security to comply with these resolutions.

In this sense, Wolff emphasized that in the City of Buenos Aires there are no prisoners, but detainees, and that the law stipulates a maximum time of 24 to 48 hours to remain in a police station. Additionally, the minister pointed out that it is the judges who have the authority to resolve legal disputes and that it is essential to comply with their decisions within the framework of the rule of law.
